Martin’s Pretzel Bakery is nestled in Lancaster County, PA, home of the Pennsylvania Dutch known as Amish Country. This is an area where pretzels were first introduced in North America back in the 19th century. Today the tradition continues at Martin’s Pretzel Bakery, with hard pretzel recipes of old, still rolled and twisted by hand.

“Our second Christmas season at September Farm we discovered Martin’s Pretzels. The pretzels are all made by hand locally and are so delicious. The bucket lended itself so well to become the base to hold all kinds of goodies waiting to be wrapped up in cellophane. The most popular was the “Pretzels & Cheese.” A big jar of mustard for dipping and three bars of cheese along the side. It made the perfect gift tied up in cellophane with a simple plaid Christmas bow. We made more and more every year. To this day it’s one of our most popular gifts!
We learned that the best way to ship this gift is to send two bags of pretzels instead of the bucket. This keeps the pretzels from breaking. (One lady in Alaska said she got cracker crumbs by the time the bucket got there!)
When customers came in the shop we wanted to give them some sample gifts to look at. I decided to wrap up some styrofoam blocks in fabric so they looked just like cheese, and added a label. So we had fake “Pretzels & Cheese” on display. Great idea until one day I realized the display was gone! Someone bought the fake cheese. There was a real bucket of pretzels on the bottom and the mustard was real. We had no way of knowing who bought it so we waited and wondered . . . post-Christmas who would ever tell us if they received it?
In January a customer finally called and told us she bought it and gave it as a gift to a coworker! She never realized the cheese was fake until she gave the gift. Fortunately, she had an on-going practical joke with the co-worker and this gift fit right in! Eventually, she came to visit for a REAL replacement and we all had a good laugh.” -Roberta Rotelle
